We started with bare booting up Zealand Rd. Then we switched to snowshoes as I was having some hip fatigue. The snow in general (Zealand Rd and Hale Brook Tr) was like walking on dry beach sand. Doable in spikes (we saw 4 people in spikes), but can also be tiring. We stayed in snowshoes while going up Hale Brook Tr. There still needs to be more snow at low elevation. Our snowshoes could hit rocks every once in awhile. They were nicer to have at higher elevation. The steep lateral slope was a pain as usual. I am glad we had snowshoes for that stretch to help create the foundation for the trail. Including the 2 of us, there were 6 people out on Hale Brook Tr today: 3 in snowshoes, 3 in microspikes. |
