Spikes worked great on the way up Ammo, even on the portion after Gem Pond. Spikes also worked ascending Crawford Path. However, crampons would have been appropriate too, but they were not required. We made the decision on summit to change into crampons, and very glad we did. The extra traction definitely helped on all parts of the descent, especially in the snow field between Lake of the Clouds and the summit cone and just below the hut. Also, by the time we descended Ammo, someone had slid or butt sledded down most of Ammo making it very smooth and slippery. In fact, my climbing partner and I wondered if, in that condition, spikes would would have worked on the way up. We carried ice axes, but didn't use, although after the fact, we discussed that they may have been appropriate on the snow field because of the wind conditions and being nearly blown off our feet several times. |
