| Lost and Found: |
I lost a pair of Petzl Lynx crampons on the way down Ammonoosuc. I had switched to microspikes for speed and they were ill-attached to my bag. We were the last ones down I think. |

Started hiking around 9am from the trailhead. My wife was in spikes the whole way to the hut, and I bare-booted until the steep bit 2 miles in and donned crampons (later lost on the way down, see note.) Up to the hut was clear and mostly wind-free. Definitely no need for snowshoes [carry for safety reasons], but traction was appreciated. From the hut, trail was easy to follow but wind made progress slow. We made our way up to the observatory, although the signed summit was challenging to reach with the wind, so we thought that was good enough and made our way down. Descending to the hut was easier with the wind at our backs, but still slow going. After spending a minute at the hut, we descended Ammonoosuc fairly quickly and were comfortably back at the car by 5ish.
Amazing day to get out, which led to both of our first winter summit of the Rock Pile. Wind was tricky but it never felt unsafe. |
