The snow is frozen but powdery layered over plastic ice which will get harder if it gets cold. I found snowshoes very helpful from the Kanc Trailhead to about 3200', before switching to Trail Crampons to the viewpoint and then snowshoes again to the East summit, continuing to the Chimney where I changed to Trail Crampons again, and after that back to snowshoes. Coming down, you want as much traction as possible. Trail crampons are barely passable and full crampons would have been better. You really don't want to leave those snowshoes home - the snow is not packing under traffic. Although there were only about a dozen hikers on the trail, the descent down the East peak is now a bobsled run. Given the loose surface, some butt sliding is inevitable. |
