Lower third of Glencliff was hard ice--spikes required immediately in the parking lot itself. Snow cover was light and increased with elevation, but was firm on the way up. I spiked up to the junction with the Carriage Road, then put on snowshoes to negotiate the drifts and try to break down the postholes into a trench. Mixed success there--the drifted snow was pretty stiff and resisted my fervent stomping. Once past the drift section, the trail was mostly windswept hard ice all the way to the summit. Summit was near the top of the cloud layer, but not high enough to break through to blue. Sun was bright enough to cast faint shadows, and you could see 50-100 meters in any direction. Almost no wind. On the descent, I had another bash at the drifty postholes, then kept snowshoes on until the lower third of Glencliff. The snow was getting softer, and I would have been tearing up the train in spikes. Once low enough and with the snow cover nearly gone, I changed back to spikes for an icy jog back to the car. 26/W48. 282/576. |
