Comments
Comments: I pulled up to the trailhead at 10:15 and the rain stopped less than 5 minutes later. This was a gift from above. I did get one 20 minute shower on the way up A-Z, but that was it and I even got a small window of sun and a nice view of Mount Field on my way back from Willey. I wore snowshoes from start to finish as there were 4-6 inches of wet heavy snow on the trail. This compacted by a couple of inches by the end of the day. I followed 4 hikers up to Mount Tom (all snowshoeless) and was able to pack their foot prints pretty well. Unfortunately, they all went back down A-Z and it looks like they tore it up pretty badly. If it freezes like this, it will be hell to hike on. I continued on and took Willey Range all the way to Willey and took Avalon down. Those sections have one set of snowshoes on them now, but really could use more. Here comes the PSA: Here is the chance for all you snowshoers out there who like to gripe about barebooters to get out there and pack these trails down early tomorrow (if it's not too late). Also, from the trailhead to the second crossing, snowshoes are not necessary. It's well packed down
