Began the day intending to do the Lion Head winter route, but quickly saw on the board that the summer route was now open. We started up the tuckerman ravine trail around 930 and ran into some snow rangers who told us the winter route was in pretty bad shape and given low avalanche danger, they opened the standard summer route. The trail was a mix of ice and hard snow, no snowshoes needed. There were several icy sections where we were happy to have crampons and an ice axe. Above treeline it was rock and thin snow and ice mostly, crampons were nice here but expect to be on rock with them. we made it to lion head and were greeted with a break in the clouds. We opted to turn around given high winds and time of day. Saw a good number of hikers and a few climbers. |
