Aside from a few scattered patches of bare, muddy trail, the entire hike was basically on a well-packed sidewalk. Some postholes here and there on the railroad bed portion of the Bondcliff Trail, but they weren't nearly as bad as those mentioned on other NETC reports. I barebooted to the first crossing of Black Brook on the Bondcliff Trail, then switched to light traction and kept it on for the rest of the hike. The snow wasn't very deep below 3,000' or so, but above that elevation it better resembled typical winter depth. Lots of snow on the trees above 3,000' as well. Cold all day today, but the wind speeds were moderate at worst, so the air didn't have a strong bite.
Before today, I hadn't hiked Bond or West Bond in winter, so when I saw the forecast as well as trail conditions on nearby peaks, I decided on a whim to give it a go. Glad I did, as doing this death march hike of a hike in winter ain't easy. |
