Comments
Comments: A spectacular day on Liberty! Whitehouse was a combination of packed snow and powder, transitioning to well-packed powder over ice on Liberty Spring Trail. We bare-booted to the main crossing, then wore spikes until just before returning to the bike path. The lower sections of Liberty Spring are a little sloppy, with sections of mud, rocks, half-frozen pooled water, and decomposing leaves. Higher up on Liberty Spring and FRT, there were a few sections of postholes (~1 foot deep) that have frozen solid. We saw a few people use crampons on the steeper sections towards the top, but spikes were entirely sufficient for traction in these conditions. (With a little more melting and refreezing, that could change--carrying crampons wouldn't be a bad idea.) There was not yet enough snow for snowshoes to ever be an option.
