Spikes from the car up to Lonesome Lake and most of the way up Fishin Jimmy. There was a slight dusting of new snow over a couple inches of packed-down base. In the upper parts of Fishin Jimmy there was some stretches of ice that made it worth switching to K10s, which we kept on across the Kinsmans and back. Most people were in spikes and definitely doable but we saw some people sliding around and struggling to get up some of the steeper icier stretches so were glad for the extra traction. Headed across the Cannon Balls we switched to snowshoes as it was a less traveled route and there was some unbroken powder that was an inch or two in some spots up to several inches. Really there was no good choice here, the trail was kind of a mess and some of the steeper parts were just ice and the shoes (Flex VRTs) had trouble gripping. Eventually we gave up and switched back to K10s for the rest of the day. Definitley glad to have them on the last Cannon Ball and down and up Cannon, some sketchy ice. Going down Hi Cannon was in better shape and spikes would have been fine. It was a clear, beautiful, calm day in the mountains! Nice meeting and chatting with CookiesOnTop at the end. |
