Peaks East Osceola, Mt. Osceola, NH
Trails
Trails: Greeley Ponds Trail, Mt. Osceola Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, January 8, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Greely Ponds trailhead not plowed. Parked 200 yds uphill on side of road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: 1 significant crossing about .5 miles in from trailhead. Non icy rocks made it hop-able without traction. I used the most upstream option going up and the most downstream option going down, both seemed OK.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Downed tree along the trail about 50 yds in from Greely Ponds trailhead...easy walk-around.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Lots of happy and well behaved pups...mine is a mountain machine that is apparently unaffected by gravity...she couldn't figure out why we slowed down so much whenever it got steep...pretty sure she could do the descent in ~15 minutes.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Hiker that left 5 mins before me dropped a crampon on the Kanc...managed to get it to her before she realized it was missing.

Comments
Comments: Bluebird day on the Osceolas. Barebooted until the Greely Ponds ski trail/Mt. Osceola trail intersection, then switched to hillsound trail crampons...removed them on the way back down at the same spot. Some exposed rocky sections up to that point made barebooting preferable. 2-3" of fresh snow, the spikes were grippy all day. These were the minimum traction I would want to use...I had some kahtoola rock spikes that I wouldn't have felt comfortable on. The steep sections coming down from E. Osceola are no joke..the carefully located treeholds on the sides of the trail were appreciated. The chimney bypass bypass is the current route and is non-threatening. Snowshoes would have been un-useful today.
