Well we started the trip and it was slightly drizzling at the parking lot when we headed off, it quickly changed to snow. My friend had spikes on til the hit and I barebooted it for about 2-3 miles. The trail had some mud still on it but the snow that recently fell made it enough that you were not really slipping on trail. Not many post holes at all. I was surprised of how decent the trail was with all the other reports. Once we got to the hut we had snowshoes on (i put them on when it started to get steep after the campsites as i love my tellevaders). Gulfside trail is a mess in the trees. If the post holes were not frozen under the snow it would have been great but it was an ankle breaking time. We then started to break 1-2’ of snow where the wind was blowing and then to bare rock. Crazy how boney it is up there. We could have been in spikes once we hit airline. We decided with the wind to go around and then up and that seemed to be the better choice. The sky started to open up while we made the final ascent to Adams, what a surprise. We switched to spikes at the summit and say 2 guys come up from star lake from osgood! Crazy guys. We were going to head down airline but the wind had other plans, we say 3 guys coming up it and we then turned and hit isreal ridge again and went back the way we came. The 3 guys coming up airline followed us down to the thunderstorm junction where they continued straight and we followed our tracks back. When we hit gulfside after airline-noticed our snowshoes prints were gone from the wind! Well we got to the hut and the decision of tired of ankle breaking walking so we headed back down to the car. Only had headlamps on for 30 or so minutes. |
