Comments
Comments: Fresh, light snow down low. Barebooted to Gem Pool where our group put on crampons (full and less than full). Didn't see anyone up high without crampons. A couple people hiking behind us in spikes turned back at some point. Crampons were nice to have, not sure we could have easily gotten up some of the sections with harder ice with regular spikes. There were a couple inches of fresh snow covering the ice & postholes. Adventure! We consulted each other at the hut and noted the poor visibility, presence of wind and precip and decided we did not want Monroe bad enough to find a route up there today (mostly because of the visibility and the likelihood of becoming encrusted in icy stuff). Down with crampons, spikes from Gem Pool back to the parking lot. First time I've been up there in winter when the snow was NOT up to the hut roof!
