Route: out and back on the Carter-Moriah.
I’ve only ever done this trail once, and that was years ago… in autumn. Very nice winter approach to Moriah!!
Carter-Moriah: well blazed in blue, simple to discern the corridor. As stated by George and Philip: the trail is chewed up with postholes. Down low there is a dusting of new snow (now tamped down), interspersed with open trail/mud. Spikes worked best. The ledges of Mt Surprise were totally negotiable with just spikes, especially as there was a light dusting of new snow over the ice. Above this the trail is almost snowshoe worthy, but I was afraid of breaking my ankle in the postholes. So, spikes stayed on all the way to the summit. The snow never got deep enough anyway.
Several super friendly persons out today, this will most certainly help to consolidate the trail. Some heroes wearing snowshoes as well. I commend them while simultaneously cautioning them about the worsening postholes as the trail nears the summit. I was peeved I couldn’t wear my snowshoes. The snow was sticky and balled up on my spikes. |
