Comments
Comments: Its January and I'm wearing trail runners, wow its wicked bony out folks. Zealand Road has 1-2" of unconsolidated snow on top of a thin granular crust and a few patches of open dirt road. Hale Brook Trail is moderately sad, postholes and divots up highy were few and far between, little surprised at how non terrifying current conditions are as I was expecting more ice, luckily todays snow accumulation took care of that problem. Majority but patchy snowcover to second stream crossing at 2500' with open areas being that delightfully delicious combo of muddy wet trail and slush atop leaves. Very bony up to about 36-3800' where the last couple open areas of wet stream trail, baby monorail type conditions with 6" of snow firm where packed, and mostly crusty and stable off trail from here to the summit. Snowshoes are dead weight until the next snowstorm. No tracks on Lend a Hand or Fire Wardens but decent drifting of footprints seen in a couple hours between ascent and descent. Coming down it became wet sticky spring snow, eww spikes balling up, and I took the spikes off about 2000', could be after crossing at 2500' but steady downward grade and slick greasy snowpack
