Mixed bag of awful with a side dish of sucks wicked bad for the trail conditions today. Took a minor detour on the ascent to go visit Duck Falls and got the delight of breaking out Lower Bruin. While snowshoes were worn for much longer than actually needed, it was a long debated question as conditions are highly variable and I hate taking off and putting the snowshoes right back on and were both the best and worse traction option within 50 yards apart many times thru the day. Spikes were used on the descent from the hut and significantly improved pace, if only they had televators. What was actual stable snowpack was a combo of concrete with a slippery, smooth covering and the rest was sadness, just miles, endless miles of misery. Above treeline beware the drift piles of snowpack as these are extremely hard and partially blue ice, otherwise its rime ice and snow covered rocks, eww. Better hope for snow soon or we might two Aprils this winter, such a repulsive though |
