Comments
Comments: I was short on time today and didn't need Wildcat D, so I headed to Wildcat A via the Nineteen-mile Brook Trail. Despite warm temperatures, I could stay on top of the packed snow with just microspikes. Once in the notch, I switched to snowshoes. I brought my Flex Alps today instead of my MSRs, as I knew they would give me a little more traction for the steep .7 up to the summit. I saw no one on the way up. My dog Ellie and I had the summit to ourselves. We had a quick snack and headed down. The temperature had really warmed up by now, and the trail was like mashed potatoes. Once back down to the junction, I kept my snowshoes on. From here on out, it was a coin toss whether snowshoes would be better or microspikes, but I kept my snowshoes on. The trail is very wet, with some postholes, and lots of bare ground, mud, standing water, and rocks exposed. Quite a few on the trail heading to the hut as I made my way out. The snowpack is in poor condition. We definitely need more snow, but it looks like the warm trend continues for at least a few more days.
