Trails: Gale River Road, Garfield Trail, Garfield Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, December 30, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Winter parking area is plowed. Road was icy but not terrible. There were a couple of big blow downs on the road. Most had been sawed through.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water was pretty high and what ice there had been was pretty much gone. We used the snowmobile bridge at the first crossing and got lucky at the second one when we found some in-tact ice stretching across stable rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There was no snow for the first couple of miles, mostly patchy ice (road walk was icy from winter lot). Snow increased with elevation and was pretty deep for the last 1.5 miles to the summit but snow conditions were terrible. It was basically mashed potatoes with huge post holes the whole way. Very tiring to slog through.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw one happy pup wearing boots
Bugs
Bugs: A few colonies of snow fleas

Comments
Comments: Give yourself some extra time to do this hike. In addition to the road walk the snow conditions make the ascent take longer than usual. Snow shoes might be helpful at the higher elevations but the trail is a pretty big mess with tons of post holes and mushy conditions.
