A WILD day was had on the Wildcats. Sticky, packed snow up to the notch in spikes and then switched to snowshoes for the ascent up Wildcat A. The snow was solid but sloped, so sidehill snowshoeing was also had. The Wildcat Ridge was soft snow loaded with deep postholes but because of the warm temps, the snow was soft and the postholes weren't too treacherous to manage in our snowshoes. When we got to the top of Wildcat D, a ski patroller told us we could not travel downhill as it was operating hours, and gave us the option of going down on the chairlift or continuing on the Wildcat Ridge Trail. For some reason, we chose to continue down to Glen Ellis. The trail was soft and postholed just like the ridge, and we switched to microspikes coming down the sketchier parts of that section. We would not recommend this trail as a descent. Finished it off with a refreshing river ford and hitched a ride back to Nineteen Mile Brook with a dear trail angel in a custom Honda Element. |
