Comments
Comments: Well this was a strange messy hike.
36 degrees at the start and 19 mile brook trail was in pretty great shape. A few collapsing snow/muddy spots but a very pleasant and solid winter trail.
Carter Dome trail seemed to have had much less traffic. The first mile was similar to walking a tight rope (not sure what was going on here, but in snowshoes one was basically stepping on themselves so that did not seem like the right answer.) At the switchbacks the temp surged to 50- which was unexpected. The snow began to deteriorate at a frantic rate. we began to encounter a variety of issues (avoiding post holes, avoiding making more, the snow literally collapsing anywhere that water ran under it, snow balls in traction, just a mess.)
Finding more of the same on Carter Moriah we called it a day and went down(no matter what you put on your feet the trail was swallowing you up- it was not fun or good for the trail) It was like April or May but with the snow depth of winter. Just not good for anything. This trail might not snap back from today until we get a foot of snow.
If you head out this weekend, you need to bring ALL your traction (well. snowshoes YES. micros, YES) and a sense of humor because it's a hot mess express.
