Day started with high cloud deck, especially to the North. As we approached Webster's summit, the skies had started clearing to the South. Barely above freezing. Hardly any wind, as one of my friends measured a few wind gusts. The verdict: just over 17 mph. So we had lunch at the summit, an almost unheard of luxury in winter. It was far better day than we expected or deserved.
Trail conditions on Webster-Jackson below Webster-Cliff junction were generally packed snow, owing to warmer temps and thinner snow cover. Some ice in the expected places. Above the junction Webster-Cliff had deeper snow and variable surface conditions with more "opportunities" for postholes. On the way down esp on slopes it was nearly impossible to avoid making or falling in postholes.
Admittedly, snowshoes might have helped prevent this trail degradation, but sadly, no one, including our group, was wearing anything but microspikes. Mine and a friend's were sitting in my car's trunk at the trailhead - where all good gear does no good. |
