 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I couldn't find the trail sign that has been there in the parking area in the past. The only indication of a trail is one of the you are entering/leaving a forest protection area, well up the trail/road a ways. The gate up the trail/road is closed. There is a RF 310 sign there along with the caution sign that went up with active logging but there isn't any logging going on now. There was a bit of plowed snow/ice to get over to get into the icy former log landing area but it wasn't a problem. The usual small place to the side for parking is there mostly above the ice |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
There is a danger the upper part of the improved road for logging could be wiped out in another good rain, as an eroded side entrance (with a red diamond) must have carried quite a bit water down it in the last storm and it took out a few feet of the road before curving back and entering the culvert. In the next storm it may take out enough it will just cross and remove the road. There is another large steel culvert above the most recently improved section that no longer works, the entrance is well above the road surface. Today there was some water flow around it but it is flatish area and didn't wash out like the first I mentioned. The snowmobile type bridge for brook crossing is working but there's still lots of water flowing or flowing in an event down the trail/road for 2-300' leaving a talus field in its wake until a water bar finally turns it back into the stream. There is/was flowing water now much of it is ice in the old road ruts in places. Some waterbars were clogged; I freed up a few some There is a tangled snarl of modest fir blowdown near the HOL. The mud spots are mostly frozen so easy going there. |

This is a pleasant walk with some stone walls and foundations as the main attractions. The AMC Guide mentions those off the abandoned Old Landaff Rd but there are others further up and close to the trail that are worth a visit. The advantage of winter is the muddy/soft areas are solid. It can be a nice snowshoe, but today there wasn't enough snow most of the time. I used stabilicers since there wasn't enough snow for spikes either in most places, but there is ice in spots and the old ruts which is largely avoidable. I didn't see any indications of winter logging now or planned, but a truck had driven up to the newest log landing and turned around, perhaps to check on blowdown or ditch damage. The threat to the road mentioned in the trail maintenance section was above that so probably not noticed. The power lines in the lower section must have been downed in the last storm. The total lack of any trail sign surprised me a bit, two years ago while there was still wood in the landing from prior logging the sign was there although leaning up against a tree and not easily seen. |
