Comments
Comments: We used snowshoes car to car. The trails up to Pikes Peak were broken out. Fauver Link Trail was hard, mostly from an icy crust, and may be OK in spikes Plus this area seemed to get about 6" of snow. Once on Sutherland, the trail softened up, and the amount of snow increased with elevation to about a foot or so. However, it seemed that all earlier hikers either barebooted or used only spikes; leaving the trail narrow (more narrow than for snowshoes), very uneven, slightly postholed. Travel over the uneven surface was tough in snowshoes, but we tried to even out the trail as best we could in prep for the upcoming storm and rain. We also tried to correct the path to follow the markers in a couple of locations when it seemed to deviate. It seemed much better on our descent, but more people in spikes were headed up as we passed down. Please use snowshoes until the trails are flat and firm. Views from Pikes Peak were great despite the cloud cover.

The trail past Pikes Peak to the summit was the best part of the hike. The deciduous trees gave way to snow ladened evergreens, a spectacular winter wonderland. It looked like someone started up the path and got 1/3 of the way to the summit. We broke trail to the summit through about a foot and half of powder. The nice sign at the summit announcing our arrival and the height was still visible. Did not see any indications of travel from the other direction.
