Spotted a car 19 Mile Brook lot (Carter Notch) and drove up to the ski area to start the hike. Ski area is clearly posted as to being on Polecat trail and that you are not allowed on the trail during hours of operation. From the beginning of Wildcat Ridge and all the way across the snow was very deep and in many places drifted with amounts anywhere from 12 to 36 inches (more to the higher side of the amounts). Trail breaking was extremely slow and difficult! Another group came up behind us and assisted in the task and together we made it across the ridge and then down to the 19 mile Brook Junction. All of the Ridge is broken but not consolidated in anyway and snowshoes would be the only logical way to try to cross at this point. from the junction of 19 Mile Brook down to the Junction with Carter Dome trail the trail was still unbroken and is currently still very unconsolidated. 19 Mile Brook Trail was broken out, but even in snowshoes there was still sinking into the snow. Any traction other than snow shoes will make for a very long day and destroy whatever is there. |
