A fun day in lots of fresh snow! Seemed like Crawford Notch got more snow than some places farther north. Started out on pretty nicely packed down trail from everyone ahead of us. Then caught up to Hiker Ed and crew who had been doing all the work breaking the trail up to Field. We broke trail the rest of the way to Field, as well as some of the way to Willey. Special thanks to Ed for lending my hiking partner his backup backup mittens after his got wet. That allowed us to keep going to Willey, continuing to help break out that section of trail as well. By the time we got back to Field, several people had broken out the trail over to Tom, so that section was fairly smooth sailing. Almost everyone had snowshoes on throughout the day, which was extremely nice to see. Definitely still a few spikers out there though - it's snowshoe season people!
All trails involved were nicely broken out and packed down by the end of the day, though snowshoes are still necessary to keep things from getting chewed up. Some small sections with water flowing on the trail at lower elevations, leaving a few rocks exposed, but up higher, everything is covered up quite well, and I'm sure that with a bit more snowshoeing, this will all soon become the WTF highway. |
