Comments
Comments: I thought I would do a short snowshoe to make sure I'm set for winter and get the muscles for snowshoeing a bit of work. Driving up Rt 49 I was worried there might not be enough snow if it was powdery for a good snowshoe; there didn't seem to be a lot in the woods. Boy was that wrong when I got into town. Right from the start heading up the ski area the snow was a couple feet deep. I used paths the students probably made to ski or sled down. Once on Snows Mtn there was one set of old snowshoe prints under another set of ski tracks up to Greeley Ledges where they took that path. It was still deep loose snow despite them. After that I was breaking trail in deep fairy powdery snow. Higher up it got a little deeper, perhaps 30+ inches. The trail might be hard to follow up there in a few places if there is no visible track. On descent, the snow changed texture some, as snow falling off the trees densified it a bit in places, and perhaps the sun and wind altered it a bit too creating some layering. I noticed that even after going back over my track returning from the outlook, that there was no nice packed trench. My single track didn't reallly pack anything. So anyone going out there tomorrow will get a good workout and need some others all in snowshoes if they want a packed trail.
