 | Water Crossing Notes: |
The 4 crossings were a bit of challenge with the first 2 being harder than the second 2. Rushing water with some fragile ice surrounding rocks/sticks. Rocks were covered in snow and entirely iced over. Might improve a bit with the colder temps over the next few days. |

Ambitious and probably pushing it a bit with a 1pm start and 4pm sunset... but I made it back to the car just in time for darkness. Quick work of the FR and roughly 2 miles of tunnel brook. Other than the 4 river crossings, it was easy going. At roughly 2150ft. I headed off trail up the ridge. The first 0.25 miles was wide open and easy grades. After that, things were steep and thick for about 700ft of elevation gain. Definitely not as bad as other bushwhacks but it was the hardest part of the whole trip. After gaining the ridge, as others have mentioned, there were many many herd paths to choose from. Lots of options to try and bypass the couple of blowdown patches. Good views of Moosilauke and Franconia ridge from those patches. Pretty easy going from 3000ft to the top. I apparently walked right past the canister but did eventually make my way back around and located it. I was unable to open it unfortunately as it seemed frozen. Only a few inches of snow throughout the entire hike. Definitely seems like it would be an enjoyable bushwhack if it was a bit warmer. |
