I executed this Plan B hike en route rather than a possible swing and a miss on Madison/Adams as the slow going snowy road conditions looked to be trending toward a 3 hr drive and then the wind report got worse. Bright, perfectly clear day with high visibility. There was no wind on the inbound on the lower el's in the morning but a biting wind up high on the summits and lesser in the trees and a slight breeze through the trees on the outbound. I hustled to get out of the wind on North. I used Hillsounds inbound and outbound to/from the North/South Hancock junction sign and full crampons up and around the CW loop. Two other hikers stuck to Hillsounds and seemed to be managing. The trail had a dusting to 1/2" of snow and ice/packed underneath. There was still rocks and roots protruding on Hancock Notch and Cedar Brook but plenty of ice/packed areas to land your spikes. Nice to run into on his 2nd grid Al and chat a bit. |
