Comments
Comments: The ice of the Ammo is NOT GOOD. Between the Gem Pool and Lakes, the abundance of sheer ice with no snow cover makes for some very dangerous spots. Microspikes are not enough - you need actual crampons for good purchase. I would not recommend this for inexperienced winter hikers or dogs until there is more snow cover. In my 25 years of going up the Ammo, I've never seen it this bad.

With the the amount of open ice in places, there are several "no fall" areas now on the upper parts of the slabs, where if you lose your footing, there is nothing to stop you going over the waterfall.

Fortunately, the Crawford, Gulfside, and Jewell are more normal for this type of year. I kept my crampons on until back below treeline on Jewell though. Trails are well packed - you definitely don't need snowshoes yet.
