Comments
Comments: What a great day. It was a fast hike in for the first couple of miles. We were able to bare boot over the first couple of crossings. About a mile from the summit, the ice started and did not quit. There was ice on the ice with a sprinkle of water just to assure it stays slick. This trail lends itself to ice hiking as it is not to steep going to north Kinsman. But the trail from North to South Kinsman requires some creative footwork. I've been on the fence about microspike brands. Not any more. The Hillsound trail crampons had 10x the traction of my hiking partner. I could walk down the solid ice (very cautiously) while he was finding off trail routes. (or my additional weight helped dig in?) Real crampons would not have been out of place because the ice was hard and the microspikes were fighting for bite in a few spots. We made it without too much creativity as did a dozen or so others we saw on the way out. I look forward to some snow pack.
