Comments
Comments: Did this loop clockwise on this crystal clear winter day with exceptional views of the Presis. Bare booted the Imp trail until I got to C-M. Lots of ice towards the top, but thin enough I could rock hop from dry stone to dry stone sticking through. This is also more easily done when traveling uphill, with less risk. Rock spikes would have made for faster travel, but it wasn’t bad. Nice views through the trees on Imp. C-M is a highway with a few big ice flows. Fast travel there. From Carter Dome down to the notch is a different story. I debated heavily whether to go this way or backtrack to Zeta Pass. Opted to go to the hut. At first it was fantastic hard pack travel, but the fun starts after the spur to the notch view. I expected steep ice flows. What I got was mostly exposed rock with small ice patches in between, and short stretches of no ice at all. Too steep to bareboot without significant risk, but not enough ice to limit walking on rocks. Another good spot for rock spikes. Alas, I haven’t been winter hiking enough yet to have an old beat up pear of micros to use in this situation. 19MB had lots of ice flow towards the top. I lost the microspikes shortly before the intersection with the Carter Dome trail and went back to rock hopping between the ice. About 8 hours door to door for this one.
