A sunny, crystal clear day with great views in all directions. Cold start with no winds in the trees except a nice breeze when we finished. Winds up top were not bad; 10-15 mph sustained with 20 mph gust as we descended down into the trees. We were able to spend time on top for quite a spell. The first third of the trail up to Carriage road was dry and leaf covered (happy face emoji) - we bare booted that. The top 2/3 was bony and ice covered with increasing ice cover with elevation (sad face emoji). The cold morning temps presented challenges at time digging in with Kahtoolas but it was manageable. Hillsounds may have been better but crampons are overkill. The trail is all ice to and from the summit as well. The descent was easier as the temps rose and the ice was more grippable. A great hike today and as always on Moose. |
