Comments
Comments: I have already done the ledges with crampons and ice floes so I decided to take it easy and do the out and back to whiteface via Rollins after tagging Passaconaway. About 2 miles up the trail I put on my beater Kahtoola's. A little further up I put on my Hillsounds microspikes and pretty much wore them until I headed back down Dicey's mill. Headed up towards Passaconaway after the Rollins jct there's a section near the start that's wet with no ice. Don't be too eager to remove your spikes, because you're going to need them soon after. Headed over to Whiteface on Rollins, you could get away with beaters until you start heading up the boilerplate ice floes. I ran into one gentleman who wore crampons headed up dicey's to the Passaconaway summit after the Rollins jct. I ran into a few people who came up the ledges and made it a point to ask how it was. 2 said it was really icy and one said it wasn't that bad, just some ice on the upper ledges. All were wearing microspikes (no crampons). The closer I got to whiteface the more I started seeing the ice mixed with some frozen granular snow which allowed me to speed up. My crampons went for a ride in my pack. If you are comfortable navigating steep ice floes in the winter you're probably good with micro's - Hillsounds will work better. If you aren't you'll probably want crampons. We need snow. 512-513/576.
