Comments
Comments: Looked at the forecast and decided a short early hike was in order. Packed extra rain gear and extra dry clothes and managed to stay relatively warm and dry thanks to my umbrella. Barebooted it until a couple miles up and then put on rock spikes. Lots of patches of ice and bare rock made stepping in the right place interesting. Ice wasn’t too bad until the slabs, but those guys were all covered in a thick sheet of ice. Should have brought my skates. Kinda wished I had on my sharper spikes, but with all the rocks sticking out, it didn’t make sense. Seems like the ice has been causing people to make several new eroded braids next to the trail which is kind of a bummer. Wind was blowing pretty hard at the summit, but in the trees it wasn’t bad. The way down was interesting because much of the ice was still there, but some had melted, so I had quite the on-again-off-again relationship with my spikes going on. It seemed that some of the rain was freezing onto rocks invisibly, so that also turned things into an interesting game of “is this rock just wet or covered in invisible ice” roulette. It was raining for about 3/4 of the time I was hiking (not snowing even at the top), so this should be even more of a terrifying luge/slip and slide tomorrow after it gets cold again.
