I parked in a pulloff just before the end of the access road to Hopkins Pond off Elbow Pond Rd. in Andover. Parking is prohibited at the boat launch proper. There is lots of parking at the start of the road as well. |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Middle Hopkins: No consistent blazing, which isn't atypical for the Proctor Academy trails; signed at both ends; a few scattered blowdowns. Bulkhead: This trail remains fairly primitive in spots. No blazing but marked with orange flagging; several scattered blowdowns; old signs are still in place. |

Checking out the Proctor Academy trail map, this looked like a fairly easy and less-confusing approach to The Bulkhead, and it was.
Hopkins Pond is quite lovely. The pond had a very thin layer of ice this morning that had mostly melted off by the afternoon. Apologies to the same group of ducks that I kept startling.
Meadowlark Lane and its extension are woods/logging roads with easy walking.
No issues with navigating Bulkhead Trail all the way to the top. The two small brooks that drain this area were flowing nicely today. Great views from the ledges today and bright sun and no wind made it comfortable to stay for a bit.
This entire route was nearly 100% dry and bare. Higher up there was some snow, but only a dusting, and there was no ice anywhere. |
