| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Haystack Road was still open. Only one other car in the lot when I arrived. I also noticed that Gale River Loop Road was open. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Black, Wet Trail, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Little River was running high enough to make the 3rd crossing challenging, but doable. Crossing where the trail meets the river looked very difficult, but more favorable conditions can be found a short distance upstream. I opted to continue upstream about 100 yards and use the two fallen trees - much easier. Be careful of the rocks just barely out of the water - many are coated with a nearly invisible layer of ice. |

| Comments: |
The trail was a typical early winter mix of conditions. Before the 3rd river crossing the trail was a mix of stretches of wet leaves and mud, and stretches of icy patches covered with a dusting of fresh snow. I bare-booted this section, but microspikes would not have been inappropriate. Snow depth increases with altitude after the last river crossing and coverage soon becomes complete. |
