Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossings on Carter Dome Trail are open but water levels are low and they are no issue.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: 19MB trail is free of new blowdowns. Carter Dome Trail has two new blowdowns. One below and one above the main water crossing. I am happy to report that they are both rotting old birches so, despite the fact that they are at least 18” diameter, they shouldn’t be an issue. The lower one is a low leaner - too low for duck under but too high to get over. So everyone is going around. It’s not a dangerous spot so it works. The upper one is an easy step over. Above the water crossings, in the switchback area, there is that massive coniferous blowdown that has now been there a while. Thank you to whoever trimmed it to make it passable!! On Carter Moriah Trail, specifically between the lower and upper intersections of the Mt Hight Trail, there are a half dozen leaners. All are stable, and only 2 appear to be new. Trimming back the branches might be all that is needed for these. I did note a really large coniferous tree that had fallen across the trail rather recently - and that someone dragged off the trail! Wowza! And thank you!!

Comments
Comments: I hiked Carter Dome as an out-and-back, this morning. I started with headlamps, for just the first 20 minutes.
The trail is, as expected, every possible permutation of ice, snow, mud and wet leaves. There are even dry sections! I wore my beater spikes and I beat them - I popped one of the metal rings off. Yay for having zip ties in my emergency bag - just one was perfect and my spikes were good to go for the remainder of the day. The warm temps led to snowballing while on the Carter Moriah Trail so I pulled off the spikes for that portion. The trench was probably nicely packed, at some point, but the warm temps yesterday and today made it mushy. Happily it’s not possible to posthole in 3-4” base over rocks and dirt, so those that passed yesterday, and those of us today, didn’t make any sort of difference to it. Weather is moving in tonight (snow, please!!)
I saw two other solo hikers. Fuzz - I really enjoyed our chat! By the time we parted ways I was really feeling the time crunch, so when I met Bruce #25 Gridder I was short of time and couldn’t chat for long.
Great day on this trail. Stay safe and happy holidays, folks!
