Late start after 9 AM.. only 1 or 2 people had been on trail after the recent snow..went by Engine Hill which was not broken out since I was solo and figured to lay a good track down I’d be going slower, referencing my Gaia.. shortly after, on the rock-hoppable section, the water made its appearance and slowed progress considerably.. ALOT of water.. grateful I wore my Sealskinz waterproof socks..around 2900’ I bushwhacked to cut out the triangulated section of the trail (which is usually the wettest)…the prior hiker(s) had turned around just after Engine Hill when they encountered the water…coming back out on Rocky Branch, encountering a crossing, I knew I wouldn’t make it to the summit with my 1PM hard turn around time, so I retraced my steps..I’d advise anyone going out there soon to consider Engine Hill bushwack to avoid this whole section of the trail… and an early start.. microspikes from start to finish for me |
