 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The guidebook says to park at the jct of the 4 roads (hence the name Alexandria 4 Cornera) but there’s just a flag and mailboxes here. Didn’t seem like an appropriate place to park to me so both times I’ve been here I’ve parked a short way east down Washburn Rd. |

Skyland Trail is blazed in white. Not always frequent and the trail can be obscure especially with leaves down on it. Vistamont Trail is blazed in yellow. I believe it’s a bit more travelled than Skyland. I do not recall any blowdowns. Clark Trail is blazed in yellow. I don’t recall blowdowns. Woodland Trail is also blazed in yellow and while it is actually blazed quite well, could be difficult to follow given its obscure footbed, particularly with leaves down. I don’t specifically remember any blowdowns on this trail either but that isn’t saying much ;P
2nd hike of the day after another little redlining loop over by Cardigan Lodge. I went up Skyland Trail to Orange Mtn, descended Vistamont Trail, then took Clark Trail to Woodland Trail, and Woodland Trail back to Skyland near the summit of Church Mtn, and descended back to my car via Skyland from there.
Much to my surprise, the Skyland Trail was actually less muddy than when I redlined the entire Skyland Trail this summer (maybe it was spring??). In any case I recalled some of the same mud pits but they weren’t quite as deep and soft this time. Woodland Trail wasn’t quite as muddy as the guidebook made it sound either though there were definitely a few parts along the road where I walked alongside it. I definitely see how this trail could be very hard to follow if it weren’t for the blaze. Nice grades though. Some slick rock along Skyland and Vistamont but the latter quickly descends back into the hardwoods. I slid on one of the wet and leaf covered log steps on Clark Trail.
Gaia had me at 8.5mi with 2100ft of gain. It took me just under 4hrs to complete. |
