Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lots of parking at Cardigan Lodge at 6:30am. Lots of cars parked roadside when we returned around 10:30am. Road in is dirt but suitable for any vehicle. Note that we’d planned to start on Old Dicey Rd but there’s signs asking people to not park roadside with no other option as to where to park :/
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We didn’t find the crossing on Manning Trail difficult. Fowler River is called Clark Brook on Gaia. The crossing on Back 80 Loop is over cascades more so than a rock hop and I imagine could be difficult at high water.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I don’t recall any blowdowns.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: All of these trails seemed suitable for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: None

Comments
Comments: Manning Trail is blazed in yellow. Sign up after one of the water crossings about ground bees that can probably be taken down now given the colder weather. Shortly before the jct with Old Dicey Rd as the trail pulls away from the river, there’s a tiny gate seen in the woods, private property signs, and a sign seen a short ways off warning of a copperhead den. I don’t recall Old Dicey Rd being blazed. No blowdowns that I recall. Trivial to follow as it’s an old road. Just note where it turns right at the jct with Back 80 Loop; there’s a gate saying “private way” but hikers are welcome. Elwell Trail is blazed in yellow. I don’t recall any blowdowns. Back 80 Loop and Back 80 Trail are both blazed in yellow. I don’t recall any blowdowns.

A wonderful SNH redline with the delightful Dee! First hike out since finishing one big goal and nice to start on another :) Lower Manning Trail —> OAB on Old Dicey to Welton Falls Rd (issue with parking here) —> OAB on Old Dicey and Elwell Trail to Mowglis Mtn —> Back 80 Loop —> Back 80 Trail back to lodge.

It appeared that the area had gotten a little rain overnight but overall there wasn’t much mud at all for this time of year. The higher elevation trails around here like Elwell are quite nice and like a garden path but other than Elwell to Mowglis we stayed quite low and in the hardwoods. Lots of leaves down, sometimes obscuring the mud, making for “interesting” footing. I don’t really remember any of these trails being hard to follow but they aren’t terribly well traveled and the leaves totally obscure the footbed down low so I’d pay attention to the blazes; most of these trails are fairly consistently blazed.

Gaia had us at 9mi with about 1700ft of gain. It took us 4.5hrs to complete.
