I have been really nervous about this hike as I have never really been sure where the trailhead is and the fact that the whole trail is on private land makes me worry about messing up and finding myself in someone’s yard.
I had nothing to worry about!! Here’s the scoop. Park on the south side of route 2, as noted in the WMG 31st edition. Cross the road to the spring. Look west down route 2 and in your line of sight, past the spring and on the same side of the road is an arrow. It points you to walk up the mowed grass of the private landowner’s house. This is concerning but there are many more arrows that beckon you along and reassure you that you are headed in the right direction. Because it is maintained by the private landowners there are not the traditional blazes that we are used to seeing. But that’s ok because the ample signs and arrows are easy to see, and three of them have smiley faces!! Once you ascend the lawn the trail curves to the right and enters the forest. From this point it’s mostly an old road with great footing.
The summit is a glorious surprise. There is a beautiful bench and amazing views of Jefferson, Washington and Monroe to your left … and to the right you can see the Bonds and S Twin. Wowza!
For a 0.7 mile hike up with less than 700’ of gain, this is quite the impressive reward for minimal effort. I would highly recommend this hike! |
