There is a full carpet of beech leaves on the first mile of the Rocky Branch Trail, it was more of an issue descending than ascending. I had never taken the Iso Express in summer before and ended up swinging too far to the right to start out. I paralleled the actual herd path to the north in fairly decent woods with a thin line of thick spruce to push through just before the ridge. I had much better luck staying on the path on the descent until I dropped too far to the right again about halfway down and paralleled the path to the south this time. I crossed the water on a good set of rocks about 0.1 mile south where I had crossed over earlier. Both this 'whack and Engine Hill BW are very soggy and will put your waterproof boots to the test. A few other people out today (five other hikers), gray jays were cute but demanding. |
