Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The cable car for the WIN!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Overall in excellent shape; would recommend consideration for reblazing Middle Mountain trail between the summit and Peabody Brook. We got really lost twice, but eventually found the trail again. The shin to knee high leaves definitely didn’t help with trail finding, LOL! There is one fairly new appearing blowdown on Gates Brook between Yellow and Middle Mtn. It’s more parallel to the trail than perpendicular, and it has a lot of branches. It is definitely amenable to a hand saw.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: My dog hiked both with me; these are great trails for dogs!
Bugs
Bugs: I actually was bitten by some sort of mosquito. In October??!!

Comments
Comments: Late on Friday afternoon, 10/28/22, my dog and I hiked the little loop of Yellow Trail over Mt Crag and then Gates Brook up to the top of Millbrook road, and then the road walk back to the car. The cable car was super fun! The vertical climb up and down Mt Crag was complicated by the really deep piles of dry leaves, so pace was slow. The summit is about as great as a summit can be - 180 degree views showcasing Moriah and Shelburne-Moriah, super flat ledge to sit on , and shade!
The right turn, that Gates Brook makes, just before it becomes a road walk is a little hard to follow but we saw another hiker and his dog and we therefore knew where the trail went!
On Sunday afternoon, 10/30/22, my dog and I returned to hike Middle Mountain. We started from the Gates Brook trailhead, up to Middle Mtn Trail and them back down Peabody to the roadwalk. The slippery leaf situation was no different than as described above. This was the second time that I have hiked the Peabody Trail and it’s really a gem. If you hike this take care on the road walk - people really come ripping down North Road.
These two hikes finished up the Shelburne Trails, for me. I have to say that Mt Crag might well be my favorite and I look forward to hiking it again!
