 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
About 1.5mi north of the center of Berlin along Rt 110, turn left onto a dirt road opposite Berlin Mini Storage. Continue about 3/4mi to a fork in the road. The fork to the right is gated. We parked here and note that you can park a surprisingly large number of cars here if need be ;) I believe the left fork dead ends. The road to this point is wide, bumpy, and steep but easily done with low clearance. Note that we did see multiple other cars up by the windmills though so there appears to be a way to access these that would allow you to get all the way up to the start of the herd path, thus making this an even shorter and easier hike! Not certain as to how they got there but I’m guessing it’s the next gray line NW along Rt 110 on Gaia. Might need mid clearance for that though. |

Day 363, Peak 361. This peak completed the NH 500 Highest for me and the NH Triple Crown. Thank you to all the beautiful family and friends that joined me for this special day and another huge thanks to all those who helped me get here. How special it was to finish on a mountain basically in my backyard and in a town which I now call home and which has come to mean so much to me :)
We continued beyond the gate for a little more than a 1/2mi before we came to a fork. We took the rocky ATV trail to the left though we could’ve just stayed straight as the roads rejoin in about 1/3mi. All that matters is that in another tenth or two of a mile after they rejoin, you take a left and ascend SE to the peak. When you hit the win turbines, take a left toward turbines 1&2. Then, after a short ways, look for a herd path up over the steep gravelly bank. Some boulders help you get up. We followed this herd path to skidder roads which we followed to within a couple hundred feet of the summit at a clearing with a view. A very short whack (slight herd path) from here to the summit. The old glass jar was visible but on a leaner. Following tradition I “hung” a new jar. Not on the highpoint but shouldn’t be hard to see. We removed the contents of it and placed them in my new register. For anyone who’s ever hiked with me, you’ll get the joke about what the register is ;) That said, I’m not sure my register will last and I intended to leave the old one there in case it doesn’t. Unfortunately, in a miscommunication, the old one was taken down and discarded. I will try to check on the new one periodically and if it’s not holding up, will place the contents in something sturdier. We followed the same path back down.
Because I had to go and create more work for myself I’ve still got: 2 more days and 4 more peaks to go… ;) |
