First 1.5 miles is on a blanket of Beech leaves. Once in the canyon, leaves diminish and the trail is surprisingly dry for last .5 mile to intersection of Lawrence Trail, despite recent rains. Lawrence Trail was smooth sailing outside of some minor mud under leaves along the first long switchback after passing through a section of erratics and ascent of Paugus begins. The South Summit views are exceptional and provide a perspective of Whiteface/Pass/Rogers Ledge, along with Hibbard and Wonalancet that is breathtaking.
I Included the ‘true’ summit of Paugus via bushwhack as well. I chose to follow the Lawrence Trail from South Peak until just before the bushwhacks begin and headed northeast to summit (poor decision!). In hindsight, my line back down to Lawrence, from the Paugus summit, was much smoother than my line up. To find this line, look for the first major water crossing (may be dry at times), that is found after departing South Peak via Lawrence. At that crossing, take a north heading and stay east of the water. I found this is easier going (moderately steep), and more direct than the route I took up, which encountered thick spruce, saturated moss, ample blowdowns and steepness.
