Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Wolf, NH
Trails
Trails: Reel Brook Trail, Kinsman Ridge Trail, herd path
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, October 21, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Trail head lot has space for about 6 cars; one truck present on late 10:45 arrival & none at 4PM departure. The lot is about 2/3 mile down a dirt road, which is good even for low cars, however, the entrance to the lot contains multiple large rocks that may be issues for low cars, like mine. Kept to the right on entering (left on exiting) and passed very slowly to avoid hitting them on the car bottom.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All rock hopable. Although, running water on RBT made for additional rock hopping.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Couple of blow downs on both RBT & KRT; one step over visible from RBT trailhead, 2 significant blowdowns on KRT (one along trail making passing tricky with mud present and one has bypass path developing around), plus several smaller step overs on both trails.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Cooper had a grand time; what's more fun than a gradual trail and lots of mud. Plenty of water on the RBT for pups including a couple of water crossings strategically located at the end of the hike to clean paws (and muddy boots).
Bugs
Bugs: small flies swarming on lower elevations, not really bothersome
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: N/A

Comments
Comments: Wanted to hike this for a while, and finally had the chance. Didn't see anyone else the entire time. Trails gradually inclined for the entire route. RBT was quite wet under the leaves; on the surface they appear dry, but are slippery. On the positive side, they protected boots from the soft squishy mud underneath.

Most reports say the KRT is pretty muddy, and it did not disappoint. There are several locations with bypasses due to the boot sucking mud. Bog bridges are in OK shape (some have seen better days), but maybe a few more could help to avoid the major mud holes. On return, spotted a deer on the KRT, about 1/4 mile before turning to RBT. Luckily grabbed Coop before he took off in pursuit.
