Minor mud at trailhead. We ascended the normal Orange route then for a little variety took the winter route (Green trail) on descent. On ascent, About 100 feet beyond the split of the Orange and Green trails, there’s a defined herd path to the left while the actual trail branches to the right; the two rejoin a bit later but maybe the BRATTS team could add an Orange blaze toward the right fork to make it clearer. Also at the top of this section, there’s a sign showing that the Gunstock Mt Tr (Orange) bears left and the Overlook Tr (White) goes Right; it might be helpful for the sign to note that Orange (Gunstock Mtn Tr) heads to the Gunstock summit - perhaps self evident but not clear to me at the time.
Always a fine, fast run-up for a little elevation gain when time demands and weather don’t allow for a drive to the Whites, with the reward of a great view of the Ossipees, the Whites and Lake Winnipesaukee as you sip and snack on the porch of the Panorama Pub, which bore the logo of a mountain bike outfit, so I guess the pub saw some use in the summer for that purpose. The quad chair and zip line were running today, so the summit had a half dozen leaf-peeping families, although not many trees have changed yet. The grey skies and clouds didn’t obscure the view, and we decided to skip the Belknap-Piper traverse as to not push our luck with the oncoming rain. |
