Some dips in access road to parking lot. However, all vehicles should be able to handle the road. Several parking areas off the road at the trailhead. |

One small fir (~4" dia) across the trail at about 1.5' above surface downhill from the spring. Birch on ground below. Easy to step over as there are no branches in the way.
One tree slanted over the trail at 4'to 6' over trail just below the summit of Starr King. Easy to go under.

Fine for dogs. Met an Australian Sheepdog and a Husky today. Both were well behaved. |

The trail had much running water, standing water, and mud spots due to the recent rains. I saw the same conditions on the Kilkenny Ridge Trail on Wednesday's hike. The rock and trench work on the trail on the ascent route to the start of the traverse helped reduce the damage due to the rains. Even so, there was lots of water in several stretches of trail. Probably the worst mud is between the peaks where you are apt to get muddy footwear but not sink in deep.
The Starr King Trail has a steady grade with no difficult footing.
Be sure to walk a short distance on the Kilkenny Ridge from the summit of Mt Waumbek to reach the blowdown area with the good views to the Presidential Range as well as many other summits.
One woman completed her 48 NH 4K peaks today on Mt Waumbek.
Lots of hikers on the trail today including one woman originally from the UK and a man originally from the Tahoe area of CA. |
