 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
From Rt 3 in Pittsburgh, I drove in a little more than 2mi on the road that heads toward Coon Brook Bog. It is unnamed on Gaia. It forks about a 1/2mi in. I took the right/northern fork. The road is easily passable by mid clearance vehicles. It becomes narrow and has a mild grassy centerline as you continue down it. Potholes and such earlier on. I don’t recall it well enough to know if a low clearance car would make it the whole way but probably. I parked at a grassy pullout. If I’d have continued 0.1mi further down the road I would’ve discovered a much larger pullout just before a gate blocking the road |

Day 315, Peak 294. 2nd of the day after Dixville Peak. I started my whack almost due south of the peak. Brush nearby the road but the woods soon opened up. I got pulled a bit east on my ascent just because it’s so flat down low and you naturally want to gain elevation. A bearing is certainly helpful here. I made a slight correction partway up and headed due north, crossing a small drainage or two. I somehow got myself on this thick miniature ridge as I approached the summit plateau. I then descended back into more brush before the final push to the summit. It became steeper as you approached the summit. Not hard to find the register. 35min to summit.
I returned on a line about 0.1mi west of my ascent line. Woods were a little more open. Popped back out onto the road about 0.1mi west of my car at the drivable end of the road (gated from here; can’t drive the loop as shown on Gaia) and walked back to my car. The hike was about 1.75mi with 500ft of gain and it took me a little over 1hr to complete. 50 more days and 71 more peaks to go… |
