A nice loop of about six miles on some familiar and new trails, after the rest of my FOT48 team set off for Mt. Whiteface (the new knee isn't ready for 4Ks yet) from the Flat Mtn. trailhead.
I warmed up by walking 113A for 0.6 mi. to the start of Bickford Trail, doing the road walk first so I would end right at the car. Bickford was interesting in the lower section as it passes right through private yards and close to residences. Once within the WMNF, the climb over a ridge and down the other side was pretty substantial.
Continuing counter-clockwise, I took Old Paugus Trail up to Whitin Brook Trail, then onto Big Rock Cave Trail. The cave is as cool as I remember it from past visits, but it's been heavily impacted by use/camping/past graffiti. Bummer. From the height-of-land on Big Rock Cave Trail, I did a short bushwhack to the spectacular high point of Mt. Mexico. ;)
Most of this route was dry, although Bickford and Old Paugus did have some small mud pits. Saw no one else all morning. Cooler temps today but the humidity was still gawdawful. |
